ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
There are many ways to design architecture.
This page features a range of concepts to help you generate design ideas for your animal pavilion architecture project.
This page features a range of concepts to help you generate design ideas for your animal pavilion architecture project.
1. DESIGN TO A BRIEF
What is the "BRIEF" for your animal project? Because animals cant talk, you need to determine the brief for your project.
For example: If you were to design a house for yourself, the brief could be; 1 story house designed in the style of Frank Gehry with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, family room facing north, 2 bathrooms, indoor swimming pool, a special place to chill & 2 car garage.

2. DESIGN BY DRAWING #1
Communicate your ideas to yourself & others by drawing. Do this 30 second line drawing exercise to practice your drawing skills.
3. DESIGN BY DRAWING #2
design by doing lots of drawings - fold A4 paper into 4 - design by drawing 4 ideas per page to KEY WORDS
4. DESIGN BY DRAWING #3
LEARNER QUESTION: Can we combine designs from other architectures to make our own?
ANSWER: Yes. Refer to your Architecture Inspiration research document, why are these buildings inspirational to you, what are their key design features, what were the 2 comments you wrote about each of them? You can combine any design features from these inspirational architecture projects into your Animal Pavilion design. They can help inspire you to come up with your own designs.
EXAMPLE: Draw the basic shapes of the architecture that inspires you. The image below is my 8x 30 second drawings of the
first 4 projects on the www.architectureschool.co.nz/cool-2 website - these are my interpretation drawings of the buildings shapes.
Do your own 30 second drawings of your design ideas. Keep your drawings simple, no fine detail. Do confident drawings of your ideas.

5. DESIGN BY DRAWING #4
This 'design by drawing' example is based on the 'life after oil' design of using abandoned oil rigs for other purposes.

Using the 'form vrs function' design technique, I drew 3 ideas of a mini AC school on a oil rig based on the ideas from XTU architects.

6. DESIGN WITH CIRCLES
7. DESIGN INSPIRATION BOARDS
8. ARCHITECT DESIGN CASE STUDIES
9. DESIGN USING KEY WORDS
What are the key words you summarised as part of the Pre-Design stage?
These are a sample of key words: Discover the beauty in ordinary objects. Free & relaxed form. Simple & minimalistic but still manages to be ethereal & beautiful.
Light footprint. Low impact on the environment. Unusual shapes. Giving no idea to its true intention. It looks classy. Looks like it could be a house of the future. Funny idea. Unexpected locations. Triangle is the strongest shape. Stands out in the night. Inspirational. Looks like it’s from a sci-fi movie. Unique features that differentiates from other structures. Building structure is unique. Looks amazing. Use key words to inspire design ideas, do lots of small drawings on quarter A4
to visualise key words, this will help you generate design ideas. Take photos of your drawings & add them to your assessment documentation. |
10. ANIMALS AS DESIGN INSPIRATION
This example of design idea inspiration comes from the axis-symmetric-asymmetric geometry of the cat for the architect.school logo.
This example of design idea inspiration comes from the close up photo of an elephants eye & trunk. I 3x duplicate mirrored the photo into 1 image, then separated the trunk shape, then did line drawings of the trunk pattern to use as inspiration in my pavilion design.
This example of design idea inspiration is the Mai Mai house 2008 by Andrew Patterson. Mai Mai is a term for the shelter used for hunting or bird watching. This house design reconciles two individual personalities, hunter and bird and creates a singular sense of place. A feathery motif referencing traditional Maori feather cloaks is used on the exterior white fibreglass walls. In this Mai Mai the glass surrounded sitting room sits like a private perch from which to enjoy viewing the city. pattersons.com/mai-mai-house
11. DESIGN ERA 3000BC ~ 2020
Architecture design is based on the forms & ideals of era's in history from the ancients 3000BC to present day.
ERA EXAMPLE

12. FORM OR FUNCTION
Whats more important when you design architecture - form or function?
"Form + Function" means the exterior form of a building looks is more important than the internal function of the building.
"Function + Form" means the internal planning of a building room layouts is more important than the exterior form of a building.
Did Frank Gehry design the Disney Concert Hall based on its form or function?

these animated 'form drawings' are design ideas of a mini school on top of an oil rig.
try this design exercise ~ fold a piece of A4 paper into quarters.
do 4 'form drawings' of ideas for a school on top of a oil rig
using the key words of 'stack' & 'cube' & 'bubble'

13. DESIGN WITH PHYSICAL 3D MODELS
These examples of physical 3D models are made from bamboo skewers & cardboard and folder paper to explore shapes & forms
14. dESIGN USING DIGITAL 3D MODELS
This example is a design for a observation tower at Huia Falls by Terry Cheng 13AOF 2019 using drawings, Sketchup & Photoshop
15. DESIGN FOR THE SUN
16. DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM MUSIC
Music can be design inspiration. Guided Explorations by RZA from Wu Tang is a spoken word album - Kill the Noise is an example of design inspiration.
17. DESIGN BY ITERATION
ITERATIVE meaning: doing something again and again, usually to improve it. (Adjective)
Show iterative improvement throughout the design, development & testing process
NZQA assessment requirements are for you to use the iterative design process during your architecture project.

19. BIOPHILIC DESIGN
Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase peoples connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, space & place conditions. Biophilic design principles have health, environmental & economic benefits for building occupants & urban environments with few drawbacks. wikipedia.org/Biophilic_design
This website has heaps of great information about biophilic design principles terrapinbrightgreen.com/14-patterns
Biophilic design can reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, improve our well-being and expedite healing; as the world population continues to urbanize, these qualities are ever more important. Theorists, research scientists, and design practitioners have been working for decades to define aspects of nature that most impact our satisfaction with the built environment.
“14 Patterns of Biophilic Design” articulates the relationships between nature, human biology and the design of the built environment so that we may experience the human benefits of biophilia in our design applications.
